The Best Methods to Prevent Mold and Mildew in Your Home

Get rid of the mold infestation in your home with these steps.

Mold and mildew are fungi that happily grow anywhere there is moisture. While both serve an important purpose in the environment, they cause unsightly issues in the home. A mold or mildew infestation is bad for your health, contributing to asthma and allergies, and causes structural damage to your home. As most develop an underlying moisture issue in the home, if left untreated, it will only get worse.

Fortunately, there are many things that you can do to keep these invaders from running wild in your home!

Fix moisture problems in the home. First and foremost, get to the source of the issue. Look for and stop all water leaks. Repair any leaking roofs, plumbing fixtures, and heating systems. Even if it’s just a drip now and again, nip the problem in the bud before it turns into devastating consequences.

Increase air circulation. Ventilate your home with fresh air from the outside. Provide warm air to all areas of the home, especially along the inside of exterior walls. After cooking or a steamy shower, open windows to let the fresh air circulate and dry up any excess water. If possible, install and use exhaust fans in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

Seal air leaks. Sealing windows, doors, and walls with caulk, stripping, and other sealants can prevent moist outdoor air, mold, and mildew spores from entering your home.

Don’t let wet items linger. Dry pots and pans right away after doing the dishes, and don’t leave wet clothes around the house. This only adds moisture to the air, creating the perfect environment for mold and mildew.

Try a natural remedy. As a safe and environmentally-friend alternative to bleaches and other chemical anti-fungal agents, you may want to look in your kitchen cupboard or pantry for some distilled vinegar, tea tree oil, or grapefruit seed extract. Use it straight to scrub away any mold or mildew, and dry the walls and area thoroughly to prevent it from growing back.

Clean the home often. Dusting, sweeping, and a little elbow grease will remove or kill surface mold and mildew before they get a chance to settle and spread.
